Frozen Head State Park
Activities Catalog

Listed below are activities, naturalist/interpretive and environmental education programs available to the public from Frozen Head State Natural Area.  These programs can be held in your classroom or at the park.

ACTIVITIES:

Communities:   A wide variety of plant and animal communities can be found at Frozen Head.   The concept of a community and its components will be explored and discussed.   GRADES 3- 5

Ecosystems:   Activities relating major ecosystem concepts - comparing and contrasting ecosystems, food chains, cycles and the balance of nature will be discussed.  GRADES 5 and up.

**Spring, Summer, Fall Guided Wildflower Hikes:  Habitat, ecology, individual plant characteristics, plant pollination, edible and medicinal uses are discussed during these hikes. ALL AGES!

Reptile/Amphibian Interpretive Talk:  An activity comparing and contrasting the two types of wildlife found within the park.  GRADES K - 6

**Aquatic Exploration:   A series of activities relating the different aquatic environments, what lives in them and what ecological factors influence their changes during the year.  ALL AGES!

Some Old & New Outdoor Nature Games:  Games that increase understanding and awareness of Predator/Prey relationships, habitat dependancy or just getting to know fellow classmates better.  GRADES K - 6

Geology of the Cumberland Mountains:  History, formation and what makes the Cumberland Mountains one of the most unique geologic areas in the eastern United States.  ALL AGES!

Introduction to Back Country Hiking and Camping:  Interpretive talk about backcountry camping as experienced at Frozen Head. ALL AGES!

**Evening Campfire Programs:  Featuring old-timey riddles, legends and stories of life in the Cumberland Mountains.  ALL AGES!

**Birdwalk and Song Identification:  ALL AGES!

Tree Identifcation:   Where trees grow and why.  Some of their characteristics will be discussed in this interpretive talk.  GRADES 3 - 6 and other interested groups.

Map and Compass:   How to read a compass and topography map, and orienteering are all featured in this outdoor program. GRADES 4 - 9 and other interested groups.

Folklife of the Cumberland Mountains:  A look into the past hisory of life and tradition in the Cumberland Mountains.  GRADES 6 and up.

Encounter the Night Time Sky:  Planets, stars, constellations and celestial cycles are discovered and explored in this evening program.  Interpretive talks are also available during the day.  ALL AGES!

**Hikes, Nature Trails:   Frozen Head State Natural Area features 36 miles of unspoiled backcountry hiking and nature trails.  These are all available and open to the public to enjoy.

Orientation Slide Show About Frozen Head:  Features an introduction to the facilities, events and programs offered at the park year round.  ALL AGES!

The Many Seasons of Frozen Head:  Features a closer look at the beauty of the park seen all year long!  ALL AGES!

Spring and Early Summer Wildflowers:  The beauty of spring time is often associated with the beauty of the spring wildflowers.  This beauty can also be found during the summer and fall as the wildflowers continue to bloom.  ALL AGES!

The Simple Things in Nature Slide Show: We can develop a better understanding and appreciation for the natural world that we live in! 
GRADES K - 6

**THESE PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED AT THE PARK ONLY

Drug Prevention Program

"Just Say No" Program - This program addresses the problems of drug abuse in today's society. GRADES OPTIONAL

The park is open from 8 a.m. until sunset for day users.  Campers quiet time is 10 p.m.

These programs are available to the public and others may be developed upon specific request.  We ask that two weeks notice be given to the parks staff for any program request.  We encourage schools and organized groups to incorporate these materials into their own programs.  To schedule a program, contact the park at 423-346-3318.
