Gardens

Here and There

2007 July

alt A really big flying bug landed on the screen door outside in the patio area while I was watering. From the size of the screen mesh, screen structure, and vertical blinds behind the sliding door, you can see it was probably 6 to 10 inches in wing span. Was it a small bird?
alt A harvest of Jalapena and chile peppers "nearly fills" my container on the kitchen table. From typical spice container in upper right, you can see the Jalapenos are 2-3 inches long, and chiles are 1-2 inches. How hot will the salsa be?

Quote of the moment
That nameless and infinitely delicate aroma of inexpressible tenderness and attentiveness which, in every refined and honorable attachment, is contemporary with the courtship, and precedes the final banns and the rite; but which, like the bouquet of the costliest German wines, too often evaporates upon pouring love out to drink, in the disenchanting glasses of the matrimonial days and nights.
~ Herman Melville (1819–1891), U.S. author. Pierre (1852), bk. I, The Writings of Herman Melville, vol. 7, eds. Harrison Hayford, Hershel Parker, and G. Thomas Tanselle (1971). ~
